Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised at how gentle acupuncture is. The needles are very fine, about the width of a hair and most patients describe the sensation as a light tingle or dull ache rather than pain. Many people even find treatments deeply relaxing.

What can acupuncture support?

Acupuncture is part of Chinese medicine and can support a wide range of health concerns, from stress, anxiety, and sleep issues to pain, women’s health, digestion, and fatigue. It works by helping your body restore balance and function naturally.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies depending on the condition and how long you’ve had it. Some people notice improvements after just 1-2 sessions, while others need a series of treatments for lasting change. At your first appointment, we’ll create a personalised plan that suits your needs and goals.

What should I expect in my first session?

Your first session includes a full consultation where we discuss your health history, symptoms, and goals. I’ll also check your pulse and tongue (traditional Chinese medicine diagnostics). Treatment may include acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, or herbal support. You’ll leave with a clear idea of the next steps.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Many points are on the arms, legs, and back, so clothing that can easily be rolled up is ideal. If needed, towels and blankets are always available to keep you covered and comfortable.

How long does a treatment take?

Initial consultations usually take around 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions are about 30-45 minutes. This gives plenty of time for both treatment and discussion of how you’re progressing.

How soon will I feel results?

Some people notice changes straight after treatment, while for others it’s more gradual. Acute issues often respond faster, while long-term or complex conditions usually need a longer course of care. The aim is to create both short-term relief and long-term balance.

What if I’m afraid of needles?

You’re not alone — many people feel nervous about needles at first. The good news is that acupuncture needles are very fine (nothing like injections or blood tests). Most patients are surprised at how gentle it feels.

If you’re still unsure, we can start with needle-free options such as:

  • Acupressure – using gentle pressure on points instead of needles.

  • Tui Na (Chinese massage) – therapeutic massage techniques to restore flow and reduce tension.

  • Shonishin (pediatric acupuncture) – a Japanese needle-free technique especially suited for children.

  • Point stimulation – using warmth (moxibustion), cups, or massage tools to activate points.

Your comfort always comes first. We’ll work together to find an approach that feels safe and effective for you.
